Dr. Lesley Schmitz’s passion has always been education. Whether she is teaching medical students, her patients or herself, her goals have included finding the knowledge and motivation to optimize living. "At its core, osteopathic medicine is about understanding structure and function relationships from the cellular to the whole organism level.” This, along with recognition of the body’s inherent self-healing and self-regulating abilities, is fundamental to the kind of medicine that Doc Lesley practices. Health is not simply in the body but also the heart, mind and soul. In her Fort Worth private practice, she utilized balancing hormonal and gut health along with nutritional counseling to augment musculoskeletal system wellness.
Doc Lesley’s interest in the brain started about 35 years ago while working towards a pediatric physical therapy degree. She got to experience young children with limitations that could be attributed to their history of head trauma. However, when her father developed and ultimately died from complications of Alzheimer's disease treatment, her goals regarding brain health crystalized.
Shortly after retiring, she devoted time to taking courses and examining research on Alzheimer's. Could it be that simple? Must it be that complex? The osteopathic principle of self-healing and regulation is unassailable. What is the underlying and unifying premise?
Findings Dr. Goodenowe’s work dovetails with Doc Lesley’s accumulated passionate education. She states that his work regarding plasmalogens has laid further foundation for an expanded medical practice.
As she states, “After all, the cell membrane is the workbench of the human body.”
Doc Lesley’s goals in teaching have always included “subverting minds to health”. She will continue to help patients ‘find their why’ in modifying their lives and help them implement intelligent strategies for measurable, meaningful vibrant living.
